The History of IWC Schaffhausen

In 1868, American watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen with the vision of combining advanced American manufacturing methods with Swiss watchmaking expertise. Located along the Rhine River, Schaffhausen offered ideal industrial conditions and a strong tradition of craftsmanship.

IWC quickly gained recognition for technical innovation, beginning with the legendary F.A. Jones caliber and continuing in 1885 with the Pallweber pocket watches featuring pioneering digital hour and minute displays. By the end of the 19th century, the maison had introduced its first wristwatches powered by pocket watch movements.

In the 1930s, IWC established itself as a leader in professional pilot’s watches with the launch of the Mark IX and other aviation-inspired models. This heritage continues today through iconic collections such as the Pilot’s Watch and Spitfire.
