The History of IWC Schaffhausen

In 1868, Boston watchmaker Florentine Ariosto Jones founded the International Watch Company in Schaffhausen—far from the traditional watchmaking centers in French-speaking Switzerland. His vision was to combine advanced American manufacturing techniques with the Swiss mastery of craftsmanship. Schaffhausen offered ideal conditions: modern factory buildings, hydroelectric power from the Rhine, and a longstanding watchmaking heritage. IWC's reputation was established early with the legendary F.A. Jones caliber. In 1885, it showcased its innovative spirit with the Pallweber pocket watches featuring revolutionary digital hour and minute displays. By the end of the 19th century, IWC had introduced its first wristwatches powered by its pocket watch Caliber 64.

Milestones of IWC Schaffhausen

In the 1930s, IWC set new standards with the debut of its first Pilot's Watch models—highly functional "tool watches." The Mark IX launched a long tradition of pilot watches, which continues today. This legacy includes the Spitfire, a tribute to the engineering marvel of the iconic fighter plane’s first prototype, flown on March 5, 1936. Designed by Reginald Joseph Mitchell, the aircraft impressed the RAF with its agility and Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. IWC honors this aviation heritage in the Spitfire Automatic. 

Another milestone came in 1939 with the launch of the Portugieser, developed for the needs of Portuguese sailors. In the 1980s, IWC celebrated success with the Da Vinci featuring the perpetual calendar. Since then, the brand has continuously introduced innovative and luxurious models, becoming one of the most esteemed watchmakers worldwide.
