De Bethune
The independent Swiss watch brand De Bethune is based in the village of L'Auberson in Sainte-Croix and is known for its avant-garde approach to watchmaking. It pursues its own concept, combining innovative solutions with traditional craftsmanship.
The Watchmaking Artistry of De Bethune
Since its founding in 2002, the manufacturer has been known for its pioneering use of innovative materials, patented technologies, and a distinctive design concept. The characteristic design of the watches is characterized by movable lugs and dials reminiscent of starry nights. Under the leadership of Pierre Jacques and the creative strength of Denis Flageollet, De Bethune continuously develops timepieces that are radically new in both technology and appearance. Whether Starry Seas, Starry Varius, or Titan Hawk: De Bethune manufactures every model exclusively in-house, reflecting the label's uncompromising commitment to precision, aesthetics, and exclusivity.
"Simplicity creates beauty. Beauty leads to mechanical perfection."
Denis Flageollet, co-founder and technical director of De Bethune
The History of De Bethune
De Bethune does not represent a classic origin story—rather, it stands for the courage to forge its own path and create true independence through visionary progress.
Founded in 2002 by Denis Flageollet and David Zanetta, De Bethune was born out of a desire to rethink tradition. While other watch brands draw on centuries-old archives, De Bethune took a different path: with an open mind, a clear stance, and an experimental approach to mechanics, form, and function. What initially seemed like an outsider project quickly developed into one of the best-known names in the independent watchmaking scene. Based in L'Auberson, a quiet town in the Swiss Jura, the manufacture has been committed to independence in both design and technology since its inception. In its first two decades, De Bethune launched over 30 of its own calibres, developed its own barrels, balance wheels, shock absorbers, and even new alloys. The focus was not solely on innovation—many of these developments were the result of functional and aesthetic considerations. The manufacturer's credo: only those who build everything themselves can question everything.
"A watch must strike a balance between science and technology, art and aesthetic beauty—and also preserve its history."
Denis Flageollet
What Makes De Bethune Stand Out?
De Bethune stands for a clear stance: no compromises, neither in technology nor in design. The label remains deliberately independent, produces in small quantities, and specifically appeals to collectors who are looking for timepieces with substance and character far removed from the mainstream. What sets the brand apart is not only the high technical standards it sets for itself, but above all the clarity with which it pursues its own line—between traditional watchmaking, avant-garde design, and its own sense of detail. Those who wear a De Bethune watch are not looking for a status symbol, but a high-performance timepiece with personality.
"Our ambition at De Bethune is to reinterpret the watchmaking tradition with a contemporary vision by creating watches that combine technical innovation with timeless aesthetics."
Denis Flageollet
