Breguet

With an inventive spirit, Breguet revolutionized mechanical horology more than 240 years ago. The brand has introduced numerous technical innovations, including the tourbillon and the first wristwatch. As early as the late 17th century, Breguet was supplying the French royal court and was highly valued by prominent aristocrats such as Marie-Antoinette and Napoleon Bonaparte. The artistry and style of Breguet have remained beloved across all eras: to this day, watches bearing the Breguet name are among the finest timepieces in the world. 

The roots of Breguet trace back to 1775, when Abraham-Louis Breguet opened his workshop in Paris. His groundbreaking ideas revolutionized watchmaking. In 1780, he developed the first automatic timepiece, followed by his first two inventions: the repeating gong spring and the distinctive Breguet hands in 1783. 

In 1790, the pare-chute shock absorber debuted, and in 1801, Breguet patented the tourbillon. His creations quickly won the favor of European monarchs, including King Louis XVI and Queen Marie-Antoinette. 

With each innovation, Breguet elevated horology through advancements like cylinder and lever escapements. Revered by courts across Europe, he became the preeminent watchmaker to diplomats, scientists, military leaders, and elites. 

He designed bespoke masterpieces for prestigious clients—such as the world’s first wristwatch for Queen Caroline Murat of Naples in 1810. Honoured by multiple institutions, Breguet joined the Bureau des Longitudes and became Royal Navy chronometer-maker. He also entered the Academy of Sciences and was awarded the “Legion of Honour” by King Louis XVIII. 

Even after his passing in 1823, Breguet’s legacy of innovation lives on. Today, the brand continues to embody technical creativity. Since 1999, the Manufacture has filed more patents than Abraham-Louis Breguet himself did during his lifetime.
