OMEGA UNVEILS NEW SPEEDMASTER “SILVER SNOOPY AWARD” 50TH ANNIVERSARY WATCH
In 1970, OMEGA was honoured with the prestigious “Silver Snoopy Award” from NASA in appreciation of the brand’s continuous support for space exploration. Now, OMEGA has released a dedicated timepiece in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the award. Merging animation with horological craftsmanship, this unique Snoopy homage has elevated the OMEGA Speedmaster to new levels of design.
Snoopy first became NASA’s mascot in the 1960s, acting as a safety watchdog and symbolising the ability to keep things positive even in serious conditions. This admiration for Snoopy resulted in NASA’s astronauts creating the esteemed award in his name. This prize would be presented to those who they believed meaningfully contributed to “the success of human flight missions.” OMEGA had the honour of receiving this award after the Speedmaster was declared “flight qualified for all manned space missions” in 1965, became the first watch worn on the moon in 1969, and showed its impeccable precision in the Apollo 13 mission.
The world’s favourite beagle is the star of the new timepiece. Snoopy is first featured in the blue subdial at 9 o’clock wearing his famous spacesuit, replicating the exact design of the silver pin that NASA astronauts give to award recipients. On the caseback, magic comes to life where Snoopy goes into orbit in the Command and Service Module (CSM). When the chronograph seconds hands are in use, Snoopy journeys across the moon, a direct tribute to the Apollo 13 crew.
