What is a watch escapement?

A watch escapement is a component of a mechanical watch. It consists of two main components, the pallet fork and an escape wheel. Found only in mechanical watches and located at the end of the gear train, its main purpose is to transmit the power from the watch mainspring to the balance wheel in a controlled and regulated way. The most common form of watch escapement is the Swiss Lever Escapement. The pallet fork has two tooth like jewels that engage and disengage with the escape wheel alternately, allowing energy to escape from the escape wheel one tooth at a time to slowly release the power from the gear train. This is what gives a mechanical watch its distinctive ticking sound.
