Santos de Cartier

After the exciting announcement at this year’s SIHH, Cartier let the world know it would be relaunching one of their classic timepieces; the Santos de Cartier. Originally created in 1904 for now legendary aviator Santos Dumont. This was the world’s first pilot’s watch, but also the first-ever men’s wristwatch. The first iteration of the watch which launched in 1978, took the original square case with the benefit of a sturdy steel bracelet and the watch’s iconic screw details which has gone on to transform Cartier into the recognisable brand it is today.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, Cartier had to take the watch to new heights. With subtle but appropriate updates, the Santos de Cartier has been taken seriously. The original case was inspired by the Eiffel Tower and still echoes French elegance, this time with a softer and more curved fit on the wrist. The bezel now extends out toward the strap which has the ability of easy changing thanks to Cartier’s new QuickSwitch system. The watch comes with two straps and in two sizes, a 35.66mm and a larger 39.8mm, the larger piece features a date window at 6 o’clock.

Inside the Santos de Cartier is the automatic calibre 1847 MC with an anti-magnetic nickel phosphorus component in the escapement and movement mechanisms. There’s also a shield crafted from a paramagnetic alloy which renders the calibre resistant to everyday magnetic fields.

The larger Santos de Cartier comes in a skeleton version in steel and pink gold, both with matching metal bracelets. Cartier has also innovated link removal with their new self-fitting technology; SmartLink, allowing the wearer to adjust the length of their metal bracelet with a touch of a button which unlatches the attachment bar to add and remove links.
