5 Reasons to buy Audemars Piguet
Buying an Audemars Piguet could be the biggest decision you ever make. Everyone has a watch they aspire to own; mine is the Royal Oak. For me the decision is easy and hopefully this 5 point guide (there are many more) will provide you with more of an understanding as to why no watch collection should be considered complete without one.
Audemars Piguet is the oldest surviving fine watch-manufacture still operating under the control of members of its founding families. Maintaining independence throughout its 137 year history has given them enormous control over creative direction and quality. Buy an Audemars Piguet because you want a share in their tradition of fine watchmaking, not because of their commercial value.
Audemars & Piguet were brought together in 1875 by a shared passion for mastering complex watch mechanisms and creating innovative designs. These principles still characterise Audemars Piguet watches today. Last year saw the 40th anniversary of the iconic Royal Oak, which was designed by Gerald Genta in 1972 and retains its original features to this day.
3. In-House Movements
Jules Audemars the watchmaker had a reputation for being able to master even the most complicated mechanisms. In his honour Audemars Piguet continue to create movements in-house. Whatever complication you are looking for they likely have made it and not just for show; each one has its own place in the Audemars Piguet collection.
4. Buy for Love
Audemars Piguet famously appears on the wrist and in lyrics of many of Jay-Z’s songs, but generally speaking they might not be as recognisable as a Rolex or a Breitling to the average passer by. Buy an AP because it will bring you joy every time you glance at your wrist rather than social peacocking, even hardest watch snobs will approve.
Audemars Piguet produce approximately 31,000 watches a year, which is extremely low for the luxury watch industry. Why do they do this? Owning an AP allows you to join a very exclusive club and can leave you feeling that you really are ‘part of the family’.
